My first work as an artist began creating portraits of dogs, using pencil. To this day it is still one of my favorite mediums. I love the texture and detail that you can capture, as well as the focus on purely values and line.

I have fallen in love with the Caran d'Ache pencil line for their amazingly smooth pencil leads, and recommend them to anyone serious about drawing.

Carbon Dust

Carbon dust is traditionally used for scientific illustrations, and involves creating a carbon dust from special carbon pencils, which is then applied to the paper using fine brushed. The medium has been an amazing discovery for me, as it is a combination of both drawing and painting skills. For me, the main benefit is the depth of black that can be achieved, as well as the speed at which I am able to create smooth value gradients.

Colored Pencil

I included a work in progress since many people seem to enjoy the process. Colored pencil is a medium that can have amazing results with a few simple techniques. First, buy good quality colored pencils (I prefer Faber Castell and Prismacolor). Second, layer and burnish! I use many, many colors together in my drawings and then use a colorless blender to bind (burnish) the colors together. Additionally, use a high quality electric pencil sharpener to keep your pencils pointy.
