Botanical Illustration: After being pregnant with her little boy last year, Amy Van Stensel decided to pursue some less toxic mediums, such as pencil and carbon dust. As a result, she took further courses in Botanical Illustration and has recently devoted a section to these illustrations. About the artist...
Amy Van Stensel grew up in Ada, just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Much of her childhood was spent creating art out of any material that was willing. Art supplies could be traditional drawing pencils, but often spread out to the unusual, such as massive amounts of masking tape (which combined with furniture can make quite an impressive sculpture). Amy's love of biology grew from many hours spent playing and painting with water colors in the woods. Nature has always inspired her and this love of the outdoors is what ultimately lead to her to move to Denver, Colorado.
Each painting, or drawing, is like a scientific study. One investigation may focus on the growth of the petals while another may focus on an entire ecological area. Each painting is representational in form, however the main goal is to capture the beauty and awe that nature inspires.
Amy Van Stensel is a member of Oil Painters of America and the Art Students League of Denver. If you are interested in the artist's work please e-mail her with inquiries (art@amyvanstensel.com).
Below is a drawing created by Amy Van Stensel's great grandfather William Balbach, a successful designer for the Whitticomb (now Stickley) furniture company.
