After the storm

Oil on linen, 11" x 14"

My husband and I found this patch of Indian paintbrush while hiking in Vail, shortly after a storm had passed.  All of the flowers seemed to be particularly showy, after getting a fresh batch of rain.  This particular species is the sulfur variety, although the most common species is a fiery red.  The Indian paintbrush is scientifically known as the genus Castilleja and has approximately 200 species; it is common throughout the western United States.
